Bill Shankly was a great football manager, guiding Liverpool to league and cup success in the 1960s and 1970s. But he was a lousy philosopher. Here is his most famous quote: “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I'm very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.’”.
