Spotlight

We have arrived at Easter time and our thoughts turn to the last week of Jesus’ life on Earth. Of course there are two facets to the story, the necessary evils represented by the events on Good Friday and the triumph over death represented by the events on Easter Sunday. The crucifixion and the resurrection, twin pillars of a single story, the provision made by Jesus Christ for our salvation and eternal life.

Crucifixion

FACT: Crucifixion originally comes from the east. It was used by Darius I of Persia, who crucified 3,000 Babylonians. Alexander the Great also used it against the city of Tyre. It was the Romans who introduced it as a routine means of execution to the land of Israel. The Roman general, Quinctilius Varus put down a rebellion in 4BC by crucifying 2,000 if its ringleaders.

Resurrection

OBSERVATION: The Resurrection changed the course of human history. Its immediate consequence was that a rabble of frightened men and women , totally disheartened by the death of their leader, were transformed overnight into a group of religious revolutionaries who turned the World upside down. For instance, it changed the Peter who denied Jesus into a bold preacher, through whom three thousand people were converted on the day of Pentecost.
